Fire Salamander For Sale

It’s not uncommon to come across the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) across Europe.

Black with yellow dots or stripes; some examples are practically all black, while others have the yellow predominate. Depending on the subspecies, red and orange tones may develop as well, either in place of the yellow or in addition to it. This very visible colour serves to dissuade potential predators by openly signaling its poison (aposematism) One fire salamander in the Museum Koenig in Germany survived for more than 50 years, proving that this species is capable of an extremely long existence.

Habits and Lifestyle

It is more likely to encounter a fire salamander in the woods of central Europe’s steep terrain. They favor the deciduous forests because they may hide among the dead leaves and in the mossy areas on the tree trunks. Its larvae can only grow in environments with pure water, such as brooks or ponds. Fire salamanders are cryptic whether they are on land or in the water. A large portion of their time is spent concealed under wood or other items. They typically only come out to play when it’s dark and stormy outside, but during the day on days when it actually rains.

Insects, spiders, earthworms, slugs, and even newts and juvenile frogs make up the bulk of a fire salamander’s diet. They are fed crickets, mealworms, waxworms, and silkworm larvae when kept in captivity. Prey items small enough to fit between the vomerine teeth or to stick to the back portion of the tongue will be captured. It clocks in at around 40 grams. One of the biggest salamanders in Europe, the fire salamander may reach lengths of 15-25 centimeters (5.9-9.8 in).

Venom

The major alkaloid poison of the fire salamander, samandarin, produces severe muscular spasms and high blood pressure with rapid breathing. The fire salamander’s poison glands are densely packed in certain regions, primarily the top of the body and the back. These glands tend to be located near the colored areas of the animal’s skin. Certain compounds found in skin secretions are potentially life-threatening, while others may help fight off epidermal infections caused by bacteria and fungi.
