Nelson’s Milk Snake For Sale
Overview
In Mexico, the range of Nelson’s milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum nelsoni ) extends from southern Guanajuato and middle Jalisco to the Pacific Coast. The Tres Marias Islands and the slender plains of southwestern Michoacán are also home to this species. This snake appears to be restricted to areas with plentiful water sources, especially those that are used for agriculture and irrigation. Lampropeltis triangulum is the milksnake species, and this is a subspecies. On average, it is 42 inches (110 cm) in length, making it around the same size as other nonvenomous king snakes.
Edward W. Nelson, who began his career with the United States Biological Survey in 1890 and rose to the position of director by 1916, is honored with the naming of this species in his honor.
Appearance
Nelson’s Milk Snake Size: Adults average 42 inches (110 cm) long.
Nelson’s Milk Snake Natural Habitat: Semi-arid coastal thorn scrub and interior tropical deciduous forests.
Prey: The Nelson takes advantage of any food source it can find. Birds, mice, lizards, amphibians, and even other snakes, especially poisonous ones, are all fair game for these predators. Its immune system was designed to resist the venom of many local snakes.
The snake’s snout is usually bright with dark flecks and it has 13–18 red rings (in rare cases, the snout is mostly black). The red bands are very broad, whereas the black ones are notably narrower and the white is extremely sparse. The black tipped scales are nearly nonexistent on both the white and the red ones. Evidence for albinism and other pattern abnormalities is gathered. It has one anal plate and 19–23 rows of smooth scales.
The Sinaloan milksnake, or L. t. sinaloae, was not identified as a different subspecies of milksnake from the more widespread L. t. nelsoni until it was brought to light by Williams in 1978.
