The top of this stocky newt, with its rounded snout, can be any shade of brown, olive, or brownish black, while the underside, which includes the head, legs, and tail, is a bright orange to yellow. Although normally grainy, men’ skin becomes smoother during mating season. From head to tail, they are 6-9 cm long and 11-18 cm tall.

The California newt (Taricha torosa) is a close relative, however these creatures are distinguished by their smaller eyes, yellow irises, V-shaped tooth patterns, and consistently black eyelids.
