Habits and Lifestyle

Panther chameleons tend to be solitary and possessive of their territory. Except for the mating season, they live solitary lives for the most part. When two males come into contact, they will try to establish supremacy by changing color and puffing up. The losing side usually retreats at this point, turning dull and black in hue. If both competitors refuse to back down, the displays might escalate into a violent confrontation.

Panther chameleons are mostly nocturnal, but they are still active at night. They spend the day hunting in the trees for insects. Panther chameleons can swiftly extend their lengthy tongues (which can be longer than their bodies) from their mouths. The speed at which the tongue expands is around 26 body lengths per second, and it reaches the target in about 0.0030 seconds. A muscular, club-like structure coated in viscous mucus produces a suction cup at the tip of this elastic tongue. The panther chameleon’s powerful jaws crush its food and it is then swiftly swallowed when the sticky tip has attached to it.
