Spiny Tailed Iguana For Sale
Appearance
Large lizards with black, spiky tails are found only in Mexico and Central America. Its popular name comes from the keeled, black scales on the end of their long tails. They have a row of long spines running down the middle of their backs like a crest. Adults have a whitish-gray or tan ground color, with a series of 4-12 well-defined black dorsal bands that continue nearly to the ventral scales. Nevertheless, there is a great deal of variation in colour even within the same population. During the breeding season, males turn a vibrant orange on their heads and throats, with hints of blue and peach on their jowls.
Habits and Lifestyle
Colonies of black spiny-tailed iguanas are home to highly sociable, territorial creatures. It is daytime when they are most active. Though they spend most of their time on the ground, these iguanas are skilled climbers that seek for rocky habitats with plenty of nooks to hide in, boulders to lounge on, and adjacent trees to scale. They use their speed to get away from danger, but if cornered they will lash out with their tails and bite.
Diet and Nutrition
Herbivorous diets are typical for black spiny-tailed iguanas (folivores, frugivores). Flowers, leaves, stalks, and fruit make up the bulk of their diet, although they may also occasionally attack and kill tiny animals, eggs, and insects. Adolescents eat mostly insects, but switch to a vegetarian diet as they mature.
