Russian Tortoise For Sale
The Russian Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldi) is the smallest species of tortoise that most people can keep. This makes them one of the most wanted… In south-eastern Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, they live in the green spaces near the edges of rocky hillsides and deserts.
Because Russian Tortoises do best at the same temperatures and levels of humidity that people do, they make great pets for people who live in small homes or apartments. They work hard but are also friendly and outgoing. They get to know their keepers and stay quite small (males reach about 6 inches, and females just over 7 inches -after many years).
Young Russian tortoises do require more moisture, so we soak ours three times a week for about eight minutes in warm, shallow water. We also keep their substrate moist. Because they are a desert species, Russian Tortoises should never have a water bowl. Their source of hydration is constant access to greens and short, shallow baths (3 times a week for hatchlings, twice a week for yearlings and two-year-olds, and once a week for adults).
In the wild, Russian Tortoises eat grasses, leaves, flowers, and some fruit. Ours receive a tortoise diet that includes cut vegetables and a calcium supplement. Other greens, fruit, romaine, and cactus pads are also provided. Russian tortoises don’t drink much; they get their moisture from the metabolic moisture made from their food. A UVB source is also provided, and ours enjoy temperatures between low and mid-90s.
Our adult Russian tortoises are 4 to 5 inches long, weigh 360 to 420 grams, and have nice coloring. These long-term captives, who are originally from Uzbekistan, are doing very well on a diet of dark leafy greens, cactus pads, mixed vegetables, and Tortoise diet. We give them a calcium supplement in their food, natural sunlight or UVB, and weekly soaks.
These tortoises do well in homes with air conditioning and in outdoor pens in places that are cooler and drier. Russian tortoises are great diggers and can quickly dig burrows. With a little planning, this size makes great pets and is old enough to be added to existing breeding projects.
