Leopard Tortoise For Sale
Leopard tortoises were first found in the grasslands of Southern and Eastern Africa. Since their importation stopped in 2000, almost all of the animals available were born in captivity in the US. Breeders have gotten better at making them recently, and once they are well started, they are great to keep and work with. Inside, they do well on mulch or sand and in tanks or enclosures that are between 77 and 87 degrees Fahrenheit.
The ideal temperature for basking is 98 degrees Fahrenheit. As long as they have places to hide that are well shaded and are safe from predators, they can live outside in temperatures up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The lowest temperature at night should be above 78°F for young tortoises and above 65°F for larger ones. Low humidity is generally best for Leopards, but younger tortoises do need more than adults.
Every third day, we soak the younger leopards for 5–8 minutes in warm, shallow water. Leopard tortoises are desert animals, so they should never have a water bowl. Their source of hydration is constant access to greens and short, shallow baths (3 times a week for hatchlings, twice a week for yearlings and two-year-olds, and once a week for adults).
They do well on Tortoise chow mixed with vegetables, and they will eat romaine lettuce or grass all day. It is important for them to take a calcium supplement.
Leopard tortoises can grow to be 12 inches long and can live up to 50 years if they are well cared for. A few of the giant subspecies have lived to be 26 inches long and 75 years old. Unquestionably, perseverance and a little luck make a difference. The key is to start with a healthy tortoise, and we only sell Leopards that are well established.
